Mobile device management/UEM for school boards

School boards create the framework in which digital teaching takes place. They procure the devices, decide on the infrastructure at their schools and are liable for its data protection compliant and secure operation. The school board creates the technical and organizational conditions for digital learning environments to be used securely and in line with the law; pedagogical use lies with the schools.

Device management for school boards

A school board is often responsible for a large number of schools and school types. Primary schools, grammar schools and vocational schools differ in device equipment, age groups and requirements for youth protection and app selection.

A system for mobile device management (MDM) and unified endpoint management (UEM) reflects these differences without administration starting from scratch for every school. It separates the schools' areas from one another and at the same time enforces uniform security requirements for all devices.

Digital device management for school boards

Because the data of minors is involved, data protection carries more weight here than in other environments. Relution is developed and operated in Germany, either in your own infrastructure, in a municipal data center or in a German cloud. Cloud IDs from Apple, Google or Microsoft are not required, because local directory services are connected via AD, LDAP, SAML and OIDC. Student data does not leave the EU.

    Each school forms its own tenant in Relution. The respective school IT sees only its own area, while the school board sees all tenants and keeps an overview. In addition, the school board can also map and manage its own devices in Relution. Relution offers the following options for this:

    • A separate tenant per school with its own devices, profiles, apps and user groups
    • Central specifications by the school board, local adjustment by the school
    • Roles and permissions assigned separately, from the school management to the teacher
    • Scalable from 5 devices at one school to several thousand across the group

  • Protecting personal data and devices

    Schools manage personal data of minors and issue devices to users who are often poor at assessing phishing attempts. Relution protects data at three points: at the place of operation, at the accounts and at the device itself:

    • Operation in your own infrastructure, in a municipal data center or in a German cloud
    • No cloud IDs thanks to the connection of AD, LDAP, SAML and OIDC
    • Remote lock and remote wipe in case of loss or theft
    • Password policies, device encryption and age restrictions enforceable centrally

  • Issuing devices and mapping operating models

    The operating models differ from school to school and sometimes from year group to year group. Relution runs them side by side within the same instance.

    • Personal 1:1 equipment, parent-funded or provided by the school board
    • Cross-class tablet cases (1:n equipment) and loan devices for lessons at home, with an overview of deadlines and device status
    • Private student devices as part of BYOD, with a switchable school and private context
    • Relution Shared Device for iPads in multi-user operation, without Managed Apple IDs

Frequently asked questions about Relution for school boards

Yes, Relution is multi-tenant capable. Each school receives its own tenant with its own configurations, apps and user groups. The school board keeps the overview and central control across all tenants. Configurations can be specified centrally and adjusted per school, without one school being able to change another school's settings.

Relution runs in the school board's own infrastructure, in a municipal data center or with a German cloud provider. Connecting local directory services such as Active Directory or LDAP makes cloud IDs from Apple, Google or Microsoft unnecessary. There is no data communication with servers outside the EU.

The device can be locked or completely wiped remotely, without it having to be physically present. On private devices in BYOD operation, the wipe affects only the school area.

For private student devices, the school board defines which areas of the device the school accesses. The school context can be activated and deactivated, and students' personal data is not recorded.

Relution manages iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, watchOS, Android Legacy, Android Enterprise, Samsung Knox and Windows 10/11, including interactive whiteboards and stationary computers.

Relution integrates directory services via AD, LDAP, SAML and OIDC as well as file services via SMB and WebDAV. This means students' work results are stored on school servers. Synchronization with Apple School Manager is possible.

The school board sets the framework and the school selects from it. Via app requests, teachers can request additional apps, which are reviewed before approval.
