Flexible learning environments, virtual experiments, a collaborative knowledge exchange, diverse online survey platforms as well as modern statistical software: digitization is firmly anchored in research at the University of Basel. The Faculty of Psychology is one of the seven faculties of the University of Basel. In recent years, it has developed into one of the most successful psychological institutions in Switzerland in terms of research and teaching. The faculty places strong emphasis on the digitization of science and research. This combination enables the efficient collection and accurate analysis of large amounts of data and the execution of processes. The processing of Big Data in research favors the study of psychological phenomena and opens new possibilities to discover behavioral patterns.

To achieve this, the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel relies on Relution's Mobile Device Management (MDM) to centrally manage its 500+ mobile iOS endpoints.

Broad application portfolio - a balancing act

Relution's field of application couldn't be more diverse: Public seminar rooms are equipped with various iPads in highly regulated kiosk mode to limit learners' usage rights. The same applies to numerous digital experiments on multi-person mobile devices. Participants only need Internet access - all functions and private use must be prevented.

The opposite is true for research projects in clinical and psychiatric institutions: the scientists must not be restricted in their freedoms; restrictions on the devices must be reduced to a minimum - with full protection of sensitive (patient) data. "Our use cases and deployment scenarios regarding research and administration bring many challenges. We hardly use any standardized profiles - an enormous administrative burden.

Thanks to Relution, our devices can be quickly and easily enrolled, efficiently inventoried, pre-configured, managed and updated. We can ensure that each individual device meets the specific applications for which it is used. This saves us a lot of time and makes our work much easier," explains Philippe Chresta, System Engineer and Deputy Technical Manager at the Faculty of Psychology.

Security at all levels - even remotely

Relution also provides extensive monitoring and reporting capabilities that allow administrators to remotely track mobile device usage. This includes information such as device status, managing settings as well as passwords, troubleshooting, and remotely locking or wiping devices "Many devices are issued by us. Thanks to Relution, we keep control of the devices," Chresta continued.

Common to all applications are the topics of data protection and sovereignty. The Faculty of Psychology at the University of Basel follows the guidelines of the German DSGVO. "Sensitive patient data belongs to the highest protection class with us . They are hosted in our own infrastructure (on premises). What speaks for Relution is that we had the choice between a cloud and a server solution," explains Chresta. Another advantage of Relution is the possibility of a test instance. "I primarily wanted to check all the functions in detail before we decided on an MDM. We were able to test up to five devices in our own infrastructure free of charge and for an unlimited period of time. Besides the product, this flexibility was the convincing criterion for Relution, and so far we have not regretted the decision," concludes Chresta.
