Relution Parent App - Managing student devices outside of school hours

Für Eltern

The Relution Parent App – Extension of MDM Relution for managing students' digital devices

Nowadays, it is not easy for parents and guardians to keep track of how much time their (minor) children spend using private media. But where publishing, communicating, and consuming content is as easy, fast, and unsupervised as it is on the internet, certain measures must be introduced to ensure a minimum level of youth protection. It becomes particularly challenging when identical devices are used in educational institutions and during leisure time.

Would you like to gain an overview of how your child uses the mobile device you have financed or that has been issued by the school, and ensure that homework is done without distraction from disruptive apps and that youth protection is guaranteed?

The Relution Parent App allows you to manage the use of student devices outside of school hours by specifying which apps may be used at what times. By connecting the Relution Parent App (on your device) and the Relution Agent App (on your child's device), you can easily select apps and allow or block them. You can control exactly when certain apps are blocked or allowed. Predefined schedule profiles minimize the daily workload and ensure that you remain in control of your child's device even when you are not there.

Your advantages

The Relution Parent App offers a wide range of options and features:

  • Comprehensive overview: Decide remotely which apps your child is allowed to use on their device and when.
  • Easy to use: Effortlessly restrict the use of gaming apps to ensure your child's safe internet use and minimize distractions.
  • Flexibility: Once you have blocked an app, you can unblock it again at any time.
  • Minimal effort: Recurring restrictions can be conveniently controlled via a schedule profile. Once created, it allows, for example, the YouTube app to be unlocked every Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and remains active until deleted.
  • Data protection: Your private device is not managed by Relution; there is no external access to your private data.
  • Security: Two-step approval process via email verification and additional approval by the school IT administrator.
  • Multiple guardians with control rights: Multiple guardians can control a student device, as one device can be managed by up to 5 Parent Apps.
  • Unlimited management options: Any number of “children” can be managed and added in the Parent App.
  • Cross-school use: Children's devices do not have to be registered at the same school and on the same Relution server.
  • Cross-platform use: All student devices, regardless of manufacturer or operating system (iOS, Android Enterprise), are compatible with the Relution Parent App.

Requirements

  • Reliable internet connection: All devices should have unrestricted access to a stable internet connection.
  • Management of the student device with Relution: The child's device must be managed by the school using Relution's Mobile Device Management (version 26.0) (this is visible with the Relution Agent app). The latest version of Relution Agent must be installed.
  • Prepared student device: The child's device has already been approved by the school administrators for pairing with parent devices.
  • Parent device: No specific technical requirements are necessary; you should simply have the latest Relution Parent App successfully installed on your device.

How it works

Student device - Agent app

  • Scan the QR code: In the Agent app on the student device, you will find the “Parent app” menu item under “Device information” in the navigation bar. There you will find the QR code required for the connection.

Important: If you encounter any problems, please contact your school administrator. The Relution team cannot assist you with this.

Parent device - Parent App

  • Download the Relution Parent App: Download the app (iOS and Android) from the respective app store to use it on your device.
  • Add device: Name your device in the app. Here you have the option to leave a free text message for the school administrator.
  • Send information: The information you enter will be sent to the school administrator. The status “Invited” will be displayed in your Relution Parent App.

  • Confirm link: Immediately after submitting your device information, you will receive an automated email from Relution. Click on the link in the email to confirm your email address. This will change the status in your Relution Parent App to “Email confirmed.”

  • Approval of the request: The request for your activation will be sent to the school's device administrator for review and confirmation.
  • Linking the apps: Once approved, the Parent App will change to “Connected.” The apps are now successfully linked, and you have access to all apps installed on the student's device. From this point on, apps can be blocked and unblocked.
  • App control: With the Relution Parent App, you now have full control over the apps on the student's device. You can select an app, whereupon the options “Approve” or “Block” will appear. You then have various types of restrictions at your disposal.

Types of restrictions

  • Complete lock/unlock: The app remains locked until the Parent App removes the restriction or Relution applies another policy with higher priority (e.g., class mode).
  • Temporary lock/unlock: The app is blocked from the current time until a specified end time.
  • Scheduled block/unblock: The app is blocked on selected weekdays at defined start and end times.

In addition, predefined schedule profiles can be used to store complete or scheduled blocks/unblocks.

For schools and administrators

Schools always retain control over student devices. The school administration can customize the setup process for the Relution Parent App at its discretion and has the option to disconnect the Relution Parent App from the student device at any time.

Time-based restrictions have the lowest priority, so other policies such as class or system-wide policies take precedence. This feature is backward compatible with older server versions.

All further steps for setting up and linking the apps can be found in our manual.
