Modern devices and software solutions alone do not make teaching in schools intrinsically better or worse. Digitization in schools is not a substitute for teaching basic pedagogical values or educational competence. The potential lies in the possibilities of networking and connecting sources that were not previously included. This is what makes new forms of knowledge transfer possible in the first place.

What does digital teaching actually mean? In principle, it’s about enabling structured learning with up-to-date media. The aim is to integrate technologies and media into everyday school life in a meaningful way - in a chaos-free classroom. It is important to show the students, most of whom are media-savvy, that there is more to discover on the Internet than games, TikTok and WhatsApp. The goal should be to teach them how to use the Internet methodically and sensibly.

Tablets are basically similar to books as working tools or knowledge stores - only with additional possibilities. They enable learning content to be retrieved or replayed. The additional level of interactivity, such as animations, allows complex issues to be presented in a more comprehensible way.

In this way, the “Pythagorean theorem” can be illustrated in mathematics lessons by virtually merging the sum of square “a” and “b” congruently to form square “c”. A school experience that makes Euclidean geometry tangible.

In the best-case scenario, digital instruction works without disruption. The perfect scenario looks like this: Software and hardware are working smoothly. The WiFi is stable, the tablets are charged, ready for use and pre-configured accordingly. The teacher starts the lesson with the tablet. The apps required for the lesson are displayed on all the students’ tablets and the students are given access to this learning content. Functions that are not currently needed, such as the camera, Internet browser or other distracting apps, are temporarily deactivated by the teacher.

All data created by the students can be stored on a school server or within the learning platform in compliance with the GDPR. It is important that only authorized persons have access. It is not possible for third parties to “tap” the data. Particularly in the case of class sets that are used by several students, the data on the tablets can be automatically deleted after the lesson.
