Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM)
Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) refers to the centralized approach to managing and securing mobile devices, applications, and data in companies. The goal is to enable the secure and productive use of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other mobile hardware, both for business and hybrid use. With EMM solutions, IT departments can centrally control and monitor all of a company's mobile devices.
Another key advantage of EMM is the protection of sensitive company data. Features such as data encryption, remote locking of lost or stolen devices, and enforcement of secure password policies effectively prevent unauthorized access. At the same time, companies can ensure that only authorized devices connect to the IT infrastructure, reducing risks of cyberattacks and data loss.
EMM is applied in a wide range of industries, including healthcare, logistics, and finance. Companies benefit from the flexibility to use device fleets productively without compromising security. Features like automatic provisioning and centralized application management make EMM an indispensable solution for organizations of all sizes.
Enterprise Mobility Management enables companies to increase productivity, automate IT processes, and ensure compliance with legal requirements such as the GDPR. Centralized control over devices, data, and applications provides IT departments with the flexibility they need to address the challenges of modern mobile work environments.
While mobile device management (MDM) – which emerged around 2005 – initially focused solely on managing mobile devices like smartphones and tablets (e.g., device settings, locking, or remote wiping), the technology has continuously evolved. Since around 2010, Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) has expanded this approach to include the management of apps, content, and identities, enabling comprehensive control over devices, applications, data, and access. By around 2017, the growing diversity of end devices led to the development of Unified Endpoint Management (UEM). UEM allows cross-platform management of all endpoints – from notebooks and desktops to smartphones and IoT devices – within a single centralized system.
