Device Enrollment Program (DEP)

The Device Enrollment Program (DEP) is a technology from Apple that helps companies and organizations automatically set up and configure Apple devices such as iPhones, iPads, and Macs. DEP allows devices to be registered directly with the manufacturer and then managed centrally. Manual setup of the devices by the IT department is not necessary, as DEP works in combination with a mobile device management (MDM) solution.

As soon as a user starts the device and connects to the Internet, predefined policies, apps, and configurations are automatically installed. This automation saves time, reduces errors, and ensures that devices are ready for immediate use. Especially in environments with a large number of mobile devices, such as schools, government agencies, or businesses, DEP simplifies management for IT teams and ensures consistent device requirements.

A key feature of DEP is what is known as “forced administration.” Devices registered via DEP are permanently linked to an MDM solution. Even after the device has been reset to factory settings, the administrative link remains intact. This ensures that security requirements are consistently adhered to and reduces the risk of data loss or unauthorized access. Companies thus benefit from increased data security and clearly structured device management.

The Device Enrollment Program is an integral part of Apple Business Manager (ABM) and Apple School Manager (ASM), which extend the convenience and functionality of DEP. These platforms allow administrators to centrally control device management, app deployment, user roles, and access rights. This enables smooth integration of new devices and compliance with company-specific security policies. Technologies such as DEP make it easier for organizations with large device fleets to scale their IT infrastructure while ensuring increased user-friendliness.
